기성세대에 비해 축적한 자산이 많지 않은 이들은 은행, 제2금융권,
P2P(개인간거래)금융 등 다양한 금융사로부터 신용대출을 받아 투자하는
빚투(빚 내서 투자)’에도 거침이 없다. 젊은 층이 주를 이루는 P2P금융의 신용대출도
올 들어 꾸준히 증가하고 있다.
올 1월 1,813억원이었던 P2P금융 업계 신용대출 규모는 올 7월 2,400억원으로 32% 증가했다.
이들 20·30대가 신흥 재테크 세력으로 떠오른 이유는 무엇일까.
젊은 세대의 과감하고 공격적인 투자 성향이 통 큰 재테크의 배경이 됐다는 분석이 나온다.
하나금융연구소가 발간한 밀레니얼 세대와 86세대의 금융행동 이해 보고서에 따르면
밀레니얼 세대로 통칭되는 20·30대는 기성세대에 비해 재무적인 위험수용 성향과
자기효능감 수준이 높다. 위험수용 성향은 투자 시 위험을 기꺼이 감수하려는 것,
그런데 국수적인 시각으로 보면 안 되고, 기업에 투자한다 그리고 노후준비를
한다는 생각으로 해야합니다.”
일찍이 한국을 ‘금융문맹률이 가장 높고 노후 준비가 가장 안 된 나라’로 평가하며
‘전국민 주식투자 운동’을 주창한 존 리 메리츠자산운용 대표.
그는 코로나19발 증시 폭락 이후 개인투자자(일명 개미)들의 주식 매수 열풍을 빗댄
동학개미운동에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 있을까.
<뉴스1>은 이런 궁금증을 갖고 지난 27일 존 리 대표와 전화 인터뷰를 했다.
존 리 대표는 많은 국민이 주식에 관심을 갖게 된 것에 대해 매우 긍정적으로 평가했다.
평소의 그의 지론대로 “주식에 투자하는 게 위험한 게 아니고 주식에 투자하지 않는 게
위험한 것”이라고 딱 잘라 말했다.
요즘 2030 젊은 세대가 주식투자로 인생역전을 꿈꾸면서 소위
‘영끌'(영혼까지 끌어모은다의 줄임말)해서 주식 매수에 나서는 상황에 여러 우려가 나온다.
향후 주가가 불안한 모습을 보인다면 전력 매수에 나선 개미는 큰 손실을 볼 수밖에 없다는 것이다.
그러나 존 리 대표는 “과거 악재가 생겼을 때
그 당시에 주식을 산 사람이 손해를 본 적은 단 한 번도 없다”며
그게 자본시장의 기본원리”라고 말했다. 결국 주식은 언젠가 올라가게 돼 있다는 것이다.
‘노 페인, 노 게인'(No pain, no gain·고통이 없으면 얻는 것도 없다).
존 리 대표는 이같이 말한 뒤 “이번이 정말 좋은 기회다.
사람들이 돈이 중요하다는 것을 깨닫고, 제대로 투자해 노후준비를 하는 계기가 될 것”이라고 했다.
그는 “하루에 딱 만 원씩만 투자하라”면서
존 리 대표는 연세대 경제학과 3학년에 재학 중 도미해 미국 뉴욕대학교에서 회계학을 전공했다.
미국 공인회계사(AICPA) 자격증을 보유하고 있으며
미국의 스커더스티븐스앤클락(Scudder Stevens and Clark)에서 포트폴리오 매니저로 일하며
‘코리아펀드(The Korea Fund)’를 운용했다.
이 펀드는 한국 주식에 투자한 세계 최초의 뮤추얼 펀드로 뉴욕증권거래소에 상장돼 성과를 냈다.
이어 2006년부터는 라자드자산운용으로 옮겨
장하성 당시 고려대 교수의 주도로 세간에 알려졌던 일명 장하성펀드(한국기업지배구조펀드)를
운용했고 2014년부터 메리츠자산운용 대표이사를 맡았다.
지난해에는 국내 자산운용사 대표로는 처음으로 ‘유튜버’로 변신,
